Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative type of arthritis that develops over time, leading to chronic pain and disability. Previous studies, such as the GAIT (Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial) study, suggest that a combination of chondroitin and glucosamine promote joint health and relieve joint pain. Glucosamine and chondroitin are made up of gylcosaminoglycans (GAGs), specialized molecules found in cartilage that cushion, repair and lubricate the joints. Now research reports that supplementing with chondroitin sulfate for two years slows knee osteoarthritis progression.
The randomized, double-blind study, published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, examined the long-term effects of chondroitin sulfate on the progression of knee osteoarthritis. Researchers from the University of Paris administered 800 mg of chondroitins 4 and 6 sulfate or a placebo (no treatment) daily to 622 patients with knee OA for two years. X-rays of the affected knee joint were obtained at the beginning of the study and at 12, 18 and 24 months. Knee OA symptoms (such as pain) were also obtained from the subjects.
The researchers found that the chondroitin group had significantly less joint space loss and pain than the placebo group. Furthermore, 28 percent of the chondroitin had knee OA progression compared with 41 percent of the placebo group.
"The long-term combined structure modifying and symptom-modifying effects of chondroitin sulfate suggest that it could be a disease-modifying agent in patients with knee osteoarthritis," the authors conclude. "Further studies with longer follow-up and different outcome criteria are warranted to assess whether the beneficial structural changes associated with chondroitin sulfate demonstrated in our study are predictive of improvement in the long-term clinical progression of osteoarthritis."
