Obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are caused by an excessive intake of fat. The fat that accumulates can cause inflammation and oxidative stress (free radical cell damage). Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a naturally occurring antioxidant with vitamin-like properties. Since it is naturally produced in the body, CoQ10 is not classified as a vitamin. CoQ10 levels decrease with age and chronic diseases. Now research reports that CoQ10 supplementation may slow the progression of fatty liver associated with obesity.
The study, published in Biochemical Pharmacology, investigated the effects of CoQ10 on liver diseases associated with obesity and diabetes. Belgium researchers fed mice either a control diet (CT) or a high fat and fructose diet (HFF) for 8 weeks. The mice’s diets were then supplemented with CoQ10 (HFFQ).
The researchers found that mice fed the high-fat diet had increased oxidative stress and inflammation gene expression in the liver. When these mice were supplemented with CoQ10, they had decreased inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in their livers.
“In conclusion, HFF model promotes glucose intolerance and obesity by a mechanism independent on the level of tissue peroxides,” the study authors write. “CoQ10 tends to decrease hepatic stress gene expression, independently of any modulation of lipid peroxidation, which is classically considered as its most relevant effect.”
