European elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of being used in traditional medicine to boost immunity and promote wellness. Elderberry is known to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing properties. High in flavonoids, elderberry exerts antioxidant effects that neutralize harmful free radicals (toxic byproducts of metabolic functions) and protect against viruses. Now a research reports that elderberry may be useful in treating viral influenza infections.
The review, published in Phytotherapy Research, investigated the pharmacological and clinical effects of elderberry. Researchers at Columbia University, Victoria University, University of Sydney and University of Freiburg, analyzed in vitro (test tube) studies, animal studies and clinical trials of elderberry preparations and uses and summarized its effects.
In vitro studies suggest that elderberry may provide antioxidant, antiviral and antiproliferative effects. An animal study and clinical trial report that elderberry may reduce blood lipids (fats). Animal studies reveal that elderberry may reduce pain and improve colitis (colon inflammation).
"Several in vitro studies together with two exploratory studies in humans and one open study in chimpanzees indicate that the aqueous elderberry extract may be useful for the treatment of viral influenza infections," the study authors write.
