Nausea and vomiting is a common complaint of most women in their first trimester of pregnancy. Conventional treatments for these complaints can have safety limits due to the wide range of developmental processes during the first trimester and use can be limited. Conventional treatments are also used with little success.
Ginger has been a commonly prescribed herbal treatment for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. It has been evaluated in many trials; this report reviewed 6 randomized controlled clinical trials and found that ginger is superior to placebo at treating nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. It also found that ginger is well tolerated and safe with no adverse reactions or side effects. It does not have a dosage restriction as many of the conventional prescribed anti-emetic medications will have.
The authors do site that larger studies are needed to further document the usefulness of ginger as an anti-emetic for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.
