Gingko biloba is derived from the ginkgo tree, one of the oldest living tree species, existing for more than 150 million years. Gingko contains potent antioxidants (ginkgolides) that neutralize harmful free radicals (toxic molecules that cause damage to cells) associated with the development of degenerative diseases, heart disease, cancer and aging. Studies suggest that gingko supports brain and memory function and cognitive performance. Now research reports that ginkgo biloba may help protect cells from radiation damage that can occur from accidental or occupational overexposure.

The study, published in the International Journal of Low Radiation, investigated the protective effect of gingko extract (EGb) on human cells and mice cells exposed to irradiation (IR). Researchers at Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences in Taegu treated human blood cells with four concentrations of ginkgo extract or a saline solution before radiation exposure. The scientists also administered ginkgo extract to mice before and after receiving radiation.

The researchers found a dose-dependent decrease in cell death (apoptosis) among the human cells treated with gingko. They also found that the irradiated mice not treated with ginkgo had significantly smaller spleens than the irradiated mice treated with ginkgo.

"The data demonstrated that EGb, through its free-radical scavenging and antioxidant properties, attenuates IR-induced apoptosis in radiosensitive cells, suggesting that EGb may have a potential benefit in enhancing radioprotective effects," the study authors conclude.

Revitle Anti-Aging Remedy

Cell-damaging free radicals can result from aging, exposure to radiation, environmental chemicals and certain drugs. Taking antioxidants like gingko can help prevent the damaging effects of free radicals while protecting your body from future disease.

Progressive Health's Revitle is an anti-aging remedy specifically developed to enhance wellness, improve quality of life and reduce the risk for serious disease. Revitle includes researched antioxidants like ginkgo biloba, green tea, cordyceps, grape seed, coenzyme Q10, omega 3 fatty acids, NAC (n-acetyl l-cysteine), alpha lipoic acid,  hawthorne, Siberian ginseng, bilberry, and essential vitamins and minerals.
