Gingko biloba is a botanical herb with strong antioxidant action, and is effective at decreasing oxidative damage in the body that can lead to heart attack and stroke. Gingko’s effects have been well documented in patients with cardiovascular disease or those who are at increased risk. However, there is a lack of research on the effects of Ginkgo in individuals with Type 2 diabetes (Adult Onset) who are a special population with increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

A study from the University of Texas measured the effects of 120mg of Ginkgo per day for three months in a population of adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study was aimed at determining if Gingko was an effective antioxidant. Researchers wanted to find if it could reduce risk of cardiovascular disease; and if so, by what mechanism?

The study found that in patients with Type 2 diabetes Gingko does offer protection from the development of cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease. It appears that Gingko affects the COX-1 enzyme, which is involved in the production of inflammatory prostaglandins and pro-platelet aggregator thromboxanes. Ginkgo was shown to decrease platelet hyperreactivity (clotting activity), which decreases the risk for cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease.

Gingko proved to be a beneficial treatment addition for patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
