The top five healthy lifestyle habits include a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein, maintaining a healthy weight, physical activity, moderate alcohol use and not smoking. These lifestyle habits are associated with a lower risk of chronic disease including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Now research reports that adults practicing healthy lifestyle habits are few and the numbers are declining.
The study, published in The American Journal of Medicine, examined the healthy lifestyle habits of US adults from 1988-2006. Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1988-1994 including 7,340 participants and NHANES 2001-2006 including 7,811 participants. The participants were ages 40 to 74, the primary age heart disease is diagnosed.
The researchers found that 15 percent of the NHANES 1988-1994 participants practiced all five healthy lifestyle habits. This number declined to only 8 percent among the NHANES 2001-2006 subjects. During this time period, the participants' body mass index greater than 30 increased from 28 to 36 percent, physical activity decreased from 53 to 43 percent, healthy diet intake decreased from 42 to 26 percent, the percentage of smokers remained unchanged and alcohol intake increased.
"Regular physical activity and a prudent diet can reduce the risk of premature death and disability from a variety of conditions including coronary heart disease, and are strongly related to the incidence of obesity," the authors state. "In the US, medical costs due to physical inactivity and its consequences are estimated at $76 billion in 2000 dollars. Research indicates that individuals are capable of adopting healthy habits in middle age, and making an impact on cardiovascular risk."
Lipitrex Promotes Weight Management
According to the above study, adopting healthy lifestyle habits can lower the risk of chronic disease. However, maintaining a healthy weight is difficult for many Americans to achieve. Over 50 million Americans diet yearly, but more than 95 percent will fail to keep the weight off long-term.
Natural nutrients can promote weight loss and fat burning, control appetite and support weight management. Pinnothin, derived from the pine nut tree, can decrease appetite by stimulating appetite suppressing hormones. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), is a natural fatty acid that suppresses fat-storing enzymes and is a proven fat-burner. Chromium is an essential trace mineral that helps the body maintain normal blood sugar and insulin levels and has an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. Caffeine, bitter orange (citrus aurantium extract), guarana and green tea are natural nutrients that enhance energy levels and thermogenesis (calorie burning).
