Korean Red Ginseng and HIV

Recent research has found that Korean Red Ginseng has protective effects against the development of AIDS from HIV. A study involving HIV positive patients who have not taken conventional medications for the last 5 years was carried out to test the effects of Korean Red Ginseng on the number of CD4 cells in the body.

The study was investigating prior claims that Korean Red Ginseng could delay progression of HIV to AIDS in type 1 only. The previous study had found a relationship between the effects of Korean Red Ginseng and this HLA type of the HIV virus.

This study showed that Korean Red Ginseng acts independently of HLA type, and is effective in more than one HIV virus strain. The study also showed that Korean Red Ginseng slowed the decrease in CD4 cells. HLA type is also inversely correlated with the decline in CD4 cells.

Researchers concluded that Korean Red Ginseng effectiveness is correlated with HLA type and positively impacts more strains of the virus than previously theorized.
