Leptin Influences Motivation to Eat

Previous research suggests that the hormone leptin helps regulate body weight and appetite. Leptin is produced in fat cells and is known to produce feelings of satiety (fullness). Now research reports that leptin also influences the motivation to eat, regardless of hunger. 


For the first time, leptin-responsive (LepRb) neurons have been found in the brain's lateral hypothalamic area (LHA). The LepRb neurons feed into the dopamine system located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the brain, which controls rewarding properties. It's the site of action for drug abuse and motivation for food and sex.


The study, published in Cell Metabolism, investigated the effects of leptin on leptin-responsive (LepRb) neurons in the brain's lateral hypothalamic area (LHA). Researchers at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor,  injected leptin into the LHAs of rats. They found that leptin injected in the LHAs of rats caused them to eat less and lose weight. Furthermore, the dopamine content in the rat's brains was raised.


"These findings reveal important mechanisms that underlie the regulation of the mesolimbic dopamine system by a crucial signal of energy stores," the study authors write. "In the future, it will be crucial to address the potential dysregulation of these neurons in states of obesity."


The researchers call for more studies to determne how the LepRb neurons in the LHA and VTA work together to control dopamine and motivations.
