Previous studies suggest that nuts have numerous health benefits including lowering the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. Now research reports that pecans may prevent muscle-nerve degeneration and promote nerve health. Muscle neuron degeneration is found in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Pecans are rich in antioxidants like vitamin E that may help protect against cell damage.

The study, published in Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research, investigated the effects of pecans on motor neuron function in lab mice. Researchers at the Center for Cellular Neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, bred mice with a decline in motor neuron function. The specially bred mice were administered either one of two diets with different amounts of ground pecans added to their food or a diet with no pecans (control). Motor function tests were obtained from the mice before and after they consumed one of the diets.

The researchers found that the pecan diet group had a significant delay in motor function decline, compared to the control group. Furthermore, the mice that ate the most pecans had the greatest benefits.

“These findings suggest regular consumption of pecans may provide significant nutritive and antioxidant benefits for your body,” says researcher Thomas B. Shea, PhD, from the Center for Cellular Neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, in a news release.

Revitle Promotes Youthfulness

Taking antioxidants and other nutrients can help prevent the damaging effects of free radicals (unstable molecules that cause damage to cells) and inflammation associated with nervous system disorders, degenerative diseases and aging.

Progressive Health’s Revitle is specifically developed to promote youthfulness, combat aging and reduce the risk for serious disease. Revitle includes researched ingredients like omega 3 fatty acids, green tea, cordyceps, grape seed, coenzyme Q10, NAC (n-acetyl l-cysteine), alpha lipoic acid, ginkgo biloba, hawthorne, Siberian ginseng, bilberry, and essential vitamins and minerals.
