The FDA has recently sanctioned research investigating the therapeutic benefits of hallucinogens, such as psilocybin ‘magic mushrooms’. Psychoactive ‘magic mushrooms’ (Psilocybe genus) gained popularity during the 1960s until the federal government criminalized psychedelic drugs.
Human use of hallucinogenic fungi is believed to date back thousands of years to the Paleolithic era.
Now research reports therapeutic benefits for psilocybin with guided use and correct dosage. Psilocybin is the main hallucinogenic ingredient in psychoactive mushrooms. However, researchers warn that high doses of psilocybin can induce fear, anxiety and schizophrenia in those genetically predisposed.
The Study
The study, published in the Psychopharmacology, investigated the effects of different psilocybin doses on mental health. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine administered varying doses of psilocybin or placebo to 18 healthy participants during separate 8 hour sessions.
The Results
The researchers found that 89 percent of the participants reported positive benefits at lower psilocybin doses including increased spirituality, improved relationships and positive mental health.
Furthermore, 94 percent of participants rated their psilocybin treatment as one of their top spiritual experiences. One year later, 83 percent of participants reported long-lasting, positive benefits.
However, one third of the participants experienced fear and anxiety when taking higher doses of psilocybin.
Study Authors Quote
“Under supportive conditions, 20 and 30 mg/70 kg psilocybin occasioned mystical-type experiences having persisting positive effects on attitudes, mood, and behavior,” the study authors write. “Implications for therapeutic trials are discussed.”
