An estimated 22 million Americans have been infected with H1N1 swine flu since it first appeared in April, 2009. Since its appearance in the spring the swine flu hit again during the late summer, peaking in the fall. Now the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that for the fifth week in a row, swine flu cases have declined.
“Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness (ILI) nationally decreased again this week over last week,” the CDC states in their latest report. “This is the fifth consecutive week of national decreases in ILI after four consecutive weeks of sharp increases.”
The CDC reports that 25 states are reporting widespread flu activity, down 7 states from last week. Although influenza hospitalizations and deaths due to pneumonia and influenza declined, they are still higher than usual for this time of year.
Furthermore, there were 12 flu-related pediatric deaths associated with lab-confirmed H1N1 virus reported to the CDC last week. “Since April 2009, CDC has received reports of 251 laboratory-confirmed pediatric deaths: 210 due to 2009 H1N1, 40 pediatric deaths that were laboratory confirmed as influenza, but the flu virus subtype was not determined, and one pediatric death associated with a seasonal influenza virus,” the CDC states.
