The World Health Organization has confirmed 3,205 H1N1 swine flu deaths world-wide. Each year about 250,000 to 500,000 people die from seasonal flu. However, sasonal flu vaccine will not protect against H1N1 swine flu. Now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the release of four H1N1 swine flu vaccines.
“Today’s approval is good news for our nation’s response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus,” states FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D, in a news release. “This vaccine will help protect individuals from serious illness and death from influenza.”
Three of the vaccines are traditional shots made by CSL Ltd., Novartis Vaccines, Sanofi Pasteur Inc., and Diagnostics Ltd. A nasal mist vaccine is made by Medimmune LLC. The H1N1 vaccines are made the same was as seasonal flu vaccines.
Preliminary data from ongoing clinical studies suggest that the H1N1 vaccines produce an immune response and have been well tolerated. Side effects are expected to be like those of seasonal flu vaccines such as mild fever, body aches and fatigue for several days after inoculation.
“As with any medical product, unexpected or rare serious adverse events may occur,” states the FDA news release. “The FDA is working closely with governmental and nongovernmental organizations to enhance the capacity for adverse event monitoring, information sharing and analysis during and after the 2009 H1N1 vaccination program.”
