Research shows that over 2 million children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are being treated with stimulant drugs. Furthermore, stimulant prescriptions for teens with ADHD rose 86% in the past eight years. Experts are concerned that ADHD drugs are being over prescribed. Now research reports that stimulant ADHD drug abuse among teens rose by 76%.
The study, published in Pediatrics, examined ADHD medication abuse among teens from 1988-2005. Researchers at the Cincinatti Children's Hospital Medical Center analyzed data from the American Association of Poison Control Center's National Poison Data System from 1998 to 2005. They tracked calls to poison control centers among 13- to 19-year olds who abused stimulant ADHD drugs.
The researchers found that calls by teens rose by 76% during the eight year period. At the same time, ADHD amphetamine prescriptions for teens rose by 133% and 52% for methylphenidate drugs. They also found that poison control center calls for ADHD teen drug abuse rose out of proportion to other poison center calls. This suggests a problem of abuse with ADHD stimulant medications.
"Although the majority of adolescents use their ADHD medication appropriately, pediatricians need to know that the increase in prescriptions of ADHD medication increases the potential for abuse, " states the American Academy of Pediatrics news release. "Since the rise in abuse remained proportional to the availability, study authors suggest that more teens are misusing stimulant ADHD medication because more have access to the medicine."
