One in five students worldwide use tobacco products. Tobacco is a major preventable cause of premature death and disease. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about 5 million people worldwide die from tobacco use. Now research reports that phone smoking-cessation counseling helped teen smokers kick the habit.

The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, evaluated a personalized telephone counseling intervention for teen smokers. Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle surveyed 2,151 smokers in 50 high schools in Washington state. Teen smokers in half of the schools received smoking-cessation counseling. The counseling included motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral skills training. The participants were followed for more than a year.

The researchers found that 21,8 percent of teens reported not smoking for six months, compared to 17.7 percent in the control group. Counseling intervention was effective for 3 months, 1 month and 7 days from the last cigarette. Furthermore, counseling intervention was most effective among male daily smokers and female less-than-daily smokers

"Proactive identification and recruitment of adolescents via public high schools can produce a high level of intervention reach; a personalized motivational interviewing plus cognitive behavioral skills training counseling intervention delivered by counselor-initiated telephone calls is effective in increasing teen smoking cessation; and both daily and less-than-daily teen smokers participate in and benefit from telephone-based smoking cessation intervention," the study authors conclude.

Oxynox Promotes Respiratory Health

Research suggests that people who smoke and patients with COPD and emphysema are often nutritionally deficient. Natural nutrients can help promote lung activity, antioxidant status and respiratory health.

Progressive Health's Oxynox has been specifically designed for those that smoke, emphysema symptom relief and respiratory health support. Oxynox includes clinically evaluated ingredients such as NAC (n-acetyl l-cysteine), lipoic acid, mullein, elecampane, vitamin C, vitamin A and magnesium.
