Edema is swelling due to the accumulation of excessive fluid in body tissues. It usually occurs in the legs, ankles and feet, but can involve the entire body.

In general, weight gain, puffy eyelids, and swelling of the legs may occur as a result of excess fluid volume. Pulse rate and blood pressure may be elevated. Hand and neck veins may be observed as fuller.

The four ‘Ds’ are often prescribed for edema:

  1. Diuretics – Diuretics are medications that promote urination of sodium and water.
  2. Digoxin – Digoxin is a digitalis preparation that is sometimes needed to decrease heart rate and increase the strength of the heart’s contractions.
  3. Diet
    1. Limit sodium chloride (salt and edema) intake to decrease fluid retention.
    2. Establish adequate protein intake.
    3. Nutritional supplements including uva ursi, dandelion, gingko biloba, bucha, and horse chestnut.
  4. Decongestive Therapy
    1. Manual lymph drainage (MLD)
    2. Compression Stockings for Edema
    3. Support socks and stockings
    4. Properly fitting shoes and socks
    5. Avoid long periods of standing and sitting

According to the NIH National Instiutes of Health:

“To keep swelling down, your health care provider may recommend keeping your legs raised when sitting, wearing support stockings, limiting how much salt you eat or taking a medicine called a diuretic – also called a water pill.”
